Djembe Tuning Workshop:

Do you rely on others to tune your djembe? Want to learn when and how to do it for yourself? Attend our djembe tuning workshop where you will learn how and when to tune your djembe and what materials are needed.

Bring your djembe(s) and leave with them sounding like new!


Learn to assemble your djembe!

Djembe Mounting Workshop:

Class 1

  • What is a Djembe?
  • Introduction to the mechanics of djembe mounting
  • Necessary tools (provided)
  • Prep for mounting (wrapping rings, tying rings, roping djembe)

Class 2

  • Goat skins will be soaked before students arrival.
  • Participants will learn to mount a skin on their djembe
  • Finish roping djembe

Class 3

  • Participants will learn the vertical tuning technique for their djembe.
  • Vertical tuning technique is the initial tuning of a djembe after its mounting.
  • Participants may choose to take home their djembe after session 3.

Class 4 (Auxiliary)

Secondary Djembe Tuning / Drum Class

This class is optional to participants of the Djembe Mounting Workshop. The Auxiliary Class is also OPEN to any individual who seeks to learn How to Tune their Djembe! Participants who seek to learn to tune their djembe will join the drum mounting class for this final auxiliary session.

Participants will learn:

  • Secondary tuning techniques (diamonds, Mali weave)
  • When to tune your djembe
  • Recommended methods to keep your djembe in tune
  • History & cultural context of the djembe in West Africa
  • ***Djembe & Doundoun Drum Class
  • Closing

***Participants have the OPTION of joining a drum class that completes the Djembe Mounting Workshop. Mounting Workshop participants may join the class for a discounted additional $ TBA.

Participants in the Djembe Tuning workshop may join the class for a discounted additional $TBA.
